It’s better to work to live, rather than live to work. Millennials are taking that prudent advice one step further, according to a new poll conducted by FlexJobs: They work to travel.
New studies have found that, for Millennials at work, travelling is nearly an essential work motivation for them, just as food and shelter. Among all the millennials surveyed, 70% confirmed that travel is a major lucrative component that makes them work.
On the other hand, a study conducted by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on millennials’ travel trends, it was reported, the younger generation has a stronger thirst for travel, and they are redefining the way Indians travels these days. 70% of the respondents opined they have a strong desire to travel and is a major reason why they work. Another 72% Millennials said that they want to visit five continents at least once in their lifetime and another 75% stated they want to travel abroad as much as possible during their lives.
Millennials Travel Trends
Needless to say, millennials have substantially impacted every industry and the tourism industry is no less. Research conducted by several global leading travel platforms reported that a new style in travel trends is on the rise where millennials prefer clubbing business with leisure, naming it ‘bleisure.’ Experts are of the opinion that, millennials are basing their entire career decisions based on the ability and the chances of travel.
According to Expedia, working professionals within the age group of 26-32 are travelling nearly 4.8 times a year on ‘bleisure’ or otherwise compared to 3.6 times for those who are above 35 years old. The social familial structure is also an advantage for them; fewer responsibilities at home, usually staying away from families – all these factors lead to millennials having the opportunity to extend their business trips more often than previous generations. In fact, 62% Millennials are more likely to extend their business trips to gain cultural experience, and see more of the world, especially while on their company’s dime.
Millennials at Work – What do the report results imply?
From the results, it is evident that millennials clearly have different priorities while it comes to work. Today’s millennials at work are redefining every industry with their path-breaking lifestyles. Travel is featuring right after the primary needs which are indicative of having a flexible work schedule. They typically want to balance out both – have a job as well as satiate the wanderlust in them. It’s more the urge to go and explore the world and still continue with their jobs.
From the results, it is evident that organisations are increasingly providing flexibility to their employees in the forms of complete or partial telecommuting, part-timing, flexible scheduling, work-from-home options, freelance opportunities and others. This trend indicates an evolving work culture where flexibility has a significant role to play.
However, the biggest implication is for recruiters and employers who need to attract talent, rather attract millennials at work, today and in the future. The results enlist not only several positive aspects of offering work flexibility on employee productivity but also highlights, how can it be beneficial to the employers as well. These include reduced employee turnover, improved productivity, less operating costs to name a few.
