Moving to a faraway city for a job is an exciting chapter in ones life. Most employers usually foot the bill for your inter-city move. If that is not the case with you, then drawing up a detailed relocation plan is essential to keep moving costs down. Make a detailed checklist of what you have to take along, leave behind, sell or giveaway.

Ask your employer to arrange for a site visit to the new city well before you move permanently. This will give you an opportunity to not only get acquainted with your new colleagues at work but also to look around suitable neighbourhoods for housing. Banks, credit card companies, insurance firms and magazine subscriptions need to be intimated about your change of address. Also arrange to cancel or transfer your utilities like telephone, broadband, DTH and cooking gas connections a month in advance.

Read the terms of your moving contract carefully and ask for an all inclusive quote that covers dismantling, packing, moving, loading and unloading charges. Ask to pay a part of the total cost on delivery of the goods, as this will ensure timely delivery. The quality of packing is crucial to prevent breakage in transit. Ensure that the mover uses high grade packing material. Label your boxes and cartons in order of rooms they are meant for or the items they contain, as it will make it easier to unpack and assemble on delivery.

If you are moving your car or two-wheeler to another state within India, do consider the road tax applicable in that particular state. The rate of taxation varies from state to state. In case of a four wheeler, the tax payable is calculated according to the cost of the vehicle, date of manufacture and the engine displacement. You will also have to obtain an NOC from your local road transport office in order for you to re-register your car in the state that you are moving to. Settling into a new life

Try to arrive a week or so before you are due to start work. Ask your employer to put you up in a hotel or arrange temporary accommodation for the first 2 weeks if you have not found housing prior to arrival. You would need a few days to setup utilities, get used to your surroundings and find your way around the new city.

Make a list of friends or acquaintances in or near your city and invite them over for tea. They can prove to be an invaluable source of information on things ranging from local markets to places of entertainment. Try websites like Zomato to look for restaurants, cafes, malls and other leisure options in your locality.
